Last year, we hosted our first ever Sugar Skull Design Contest and it was such a huge success that we decided to do it again! The rules are pretty simple, all you have to do is make a sugar skull! We had tons of great entries last year; there were beaded purses, jewelry, embellished styrofoam skulls, handcrafted out of clay. There was even an embellished animal skull! Because we left the terms of the contest pretty open, we were overwhelmed but the unique and creative entries. Take a look below for our Top Ten finalists!

Out of the top ten, our judges chose their favorite.  Last years grand prize winner not only won a $250 Shipwreck Beads gift card but got to have her work published in a Shipwreck Beads print advertisement.  Our winner, Vanessa Steffen, had her work published in Make Jewellery, Bead & Button and BeadStyle magazines!  The judging panel (including yours truly) chose Vanessa out of all the stellar selections because we loved the bright colors and her use of white space.  Her work was incredibly well planned and meticulously executed.  Here is the final ad that featured her work.

Pretty great, right? We are accepting entries for the contest now through October 25th.  The first place winner gets a $250 Shipwreck Beads gift card and the chance to have their work published in a Shipwreck Beads advertisement.  Second place gets a $75 gift card and third place wins $50.  I can’t wait to see what incredible entries we get this year!
